The Use of Intellectual Property Protection by Small and Medium Scale Enterprises in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine the use of Intellectual Property protection by Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Descriptive survey research design was employed to the study. The size of population was 264 found in Addis Ababa. Of this total population, fifty two sample members of SMEs members were included in this study; and they were selected by comprehensive and random sampling techniques. Both closed and open ended questionnaire and document analysis were the data collection instruments. These instruments were developed by the researcher. Pre-test of the items was conducted before the questionnaire was administered. The reliabilities of the scales were computed using Cronbach Alpha. The Cronbach reliability values were, for awareness level on IP = 0.79, for experience of SMEs on using IP = 0.78, and for the supporting program of IP = 0.80. Descriptive and inferential statistical analysis techniques were employed to compute the data. Fifty two questionnaires were properly filled in and analyzed. Results of a one sample t-test for awareness levels on Intellectual Property revealed that (t = 2.785, df = 51, P = 0.007). This indicated that SMEs members were informed about Intellectual Property and the existence of the EIPO. One sample t-test also computed in the experience of SMEs in using Intellectual Property to protect their invented products (t = -0.330, df = 51, p = 0.743) and this implying that SMEs were not effective in the protection of their invented products by using Intellectual Property. Similarly the one sample t-test also used for computing the results of the EIPO supporting programs to SMEs to exploit their IPRs. The results were (t = -4.859, df = 51, p = 0.000) and this implying that the office doesn’t give any satisfactory support for SMEs. The document analysis also indicated the same result in all aspects of the variables as that of the questionnaire. The summary and the major findings of the study were reflected. Therefore, it may be concluded that SMEs were not effective in use of their Intellectual Property rights. Thus, provision of training on the various areas of Intellectual Property, improving the capacity of SMEs members and their association leaders especially in management of their Intellectual Property portfolio, and establishing special supporting program and structure in both the EIPO and Addis Ababa City Administration Micro and Small Enterprise Development Agency to support them to enhance their IP assets management capacity.
