Maximising the Use of Patent Information and Documentation in Zimbabwe

Abstract

This study examined on the maximising the use of patent information and documentation in Zimbabwe. The research was pure of a qualitative in nature where the researcher used personal interview, focus group discuss and observation research instruments were used to gather data and explored on the views of the participants concerning the maximum use of patent information and documentation in Zimbabwe for technological and socio-economic development. Economic theory was utilised to explain the importance of use patent information in various fields such as the industry, SMEs, research and development, academic and policy maker in order to revive the Zimbabwe economy and create employment for the public to benefit. Study findings revealed that the use of patent information is minimal in Zimbabwe mainly due to lack of awareness and lack of expertise and capital for commercialisation. The study however, recommended that the government and other stakeholders who are responsible for the maximum utilisation of patent information should collaborate and pool resource together and setup technology hubs in order to assist in educating the public and commercialisation of innovative ideas.
