Abstract: The purpose of the study was to examine the potentials of universities and research and development institutions in utilizing technology to help boost industries in The Gambia. The study focussed on the potentials of local universities and research and development institutions in innovating and generating new technologies that can be effectively transferred to local industries for their growth and competitiveness. It did not focus on external technologies that the local industries acquire for their productivity and growth. The study used both qualitative and quantitative methods to collect data from universities, research and development institutions and selected industries in the areas of health, ago-based, information and communications technology, and energy. The key findings amongst other things is the lack of awareness amongst respondents on the importance and relevance of technology transfer for both researchers in universities and R&Ds, and employees in industries. It has also been established that there is no regulatory framework for technology transfer in The Gambia, and that the limited sectoral policy pronouncements on technology transfer are not know to key stakeholders. The study concludes that awareness creation on technology transfer for researchers and employees of industry is highly needed. Funding for research and innovation should be increased to improve and support innovation and creativity. Industries should establish departments for research and development and therefore innovation and acquisition. The finalization of a National Intellectual Property Strategy that will enhance innovation, creativity, technology development and transfer is key and should be fast-tracked. As part of challenges for the study was respondent’s interest to participate in the study and the return rate of questionnaires. The lack of awareness on technology transfer also created challenges in respondents’ participation. Despite the challenges such a study and the findings have been found to be relevant and timely for The Gambia.
